Brave Kid's Star Continues to Rise

Despite tasting defeat for the first time in his 7 race career, Brave Kid lost no admirers when running 3rd in the Gr1 Hong Kong Derby on Sunday. In just his first preparation of racing Brave Kid has developed into one of the very best gallopers in Hong Kong which is a remarkable feat. One can only wonder as to the heights he may climb should he improve further in his next campaign.
Brave Kid was purchased as a yearling by Bruce Perry for Homebush Partnership and then sold to his current connections after winning a trial at 2 years.

A Chance To Dream Looks the Goods

On the back of a resounding Maiden win, A Chance To Dream (3 Ch. F. Volksraad – Make Me Dream, by Sadler’s Wells) rocketed into NZ Oaks contention after her super win in the $45,000, Listed, Mercedes-Benz Sunline Vase for three-year-old fillies over 2100 metres at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Miss Maren

Despite a tough Spring, Miss Maren (Stravinsky – Deebee Lady) has proven that she is one of the best mares in Australasia with a strong fresh up win at Caulfield and then a strong finishing third in the Gr2 St George Stakes.            Miss Maren now heads to the Gr1 Australian Cup.

Karaka 2010 Yearling Sales

Leading up to the 2010 Sales the general consensus amongst industry participants was that the sale would see a slight decline on the 2009 figures. However due to an increased number of Australian buyers inspecting yearlings at Karaka prior to the first lot going through the ring, there was an air of optimism from vendors that prices could well hold up. What could never have been expected was a rise in the overall sale average of 33%.

With an average price at K1 of $183,119, a number of buyers found it difficult to compete and secure the yearlings they wanted. Despite this, Bruce Perry Bloodstock was able to secure 14 yearlings including 10 from K1. While being out bid on a number of higher priced yearlings Bruce was able to secure a number of quality yearlings from the Premier Sale and ended up securing them all for $135,000 or less, including a few which he thought would have fetched considerably more.

Overall Bruce thought the quality of the Premier yearlings was outstanding, with many correct and athletic yearlings on offer.

Homebush Partnership Sponsor the Gr3 Lowland Stakes

Homebush Partnership is delighted to be associated with the Gr3 Lowland Stakes and would like to thank JML Bloodstock, Brown Thoroughbreds, Little Avondale Stud and Bruce Perry Bloodstock for their support in sponsoring this wonderful 3yo Fillies Race. The fillies race is part of the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series and is run at Hastings on March the 6th over 2100m and is an important lead up to the Gr1 New Zealand oaks which is run at Trentham two weeks later.

In 2007 Bruce Perry established Homebush P/Ship No1 amongst a group of friends with the intention of purchasing 6 yearlings to race and sell. That first group of horses included the outstanding gallopers Down the Road (1st  G2 ARC Championship S and 2nd G1 New Zealand Derby) and Brave Kid (undefeated in 5 starts – all in Hong Kong this season).
In 2009 Homebush P/Ship No2 purchased 4 yearlings at Karaka and once again they look to have some exciting prospects. The first of who will most likely race late March.
At the recent Karaka sales Homebush P/Ship No3 secured 4 yearlings to continue their quest to race and sell quality gallopers.
Meanwhile Bruce Perry Bloodstock and Phill Cataldo Bloodstock continue their support of the NZ Racing by jointly sponsoring the Masterton RC 2yo race on March the 28th.

2009 - 2010 SEASON STARTS STRONGLY FOR BP B/S PURCHASED MARES

Rationable (purchased through BP B/S for Waikato Stud) joined a select group of mares when her son VIGOR won the VRC Makybe Diva S., Gr.2. Vigor became her third SW as she has also left VINCENT MANGANO and JOEY MASSINO. Rationable is a daughter of the Gr2 winning Rationale who left the SW Wise Lass and Egoli Lass. Rationale is also the dam of Rationaine who Bruce purchased for Trelawney Stud as a breeding prospect at the end of her racing career. Rationaine has since left Amalfi who won the Gr1 VRC Derby.

Meanwhile the Patrick Shaw trained ROCKET MAN was recently named the inaugural winner of the Aushorse Marketing Australian-bred Singapore Champion Award. Rocket Man (Viscount-Macrosa, by McGinty), a half-brother to dual South African Group 1 winner Our Giant, took Singapore racing by storm last season.
Bred by Dean Fleming and sold through the Tyreel Stud draft at the 2007 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale for $60,000, Rocket Man quickly graduated to become the Champion Sprinter of Singapore, with his feats recognised on a global scale.

ROYAL BOOST FOR TRELAWNEY

Racing at Royal Ascot held the focus of the racing world last week and the third day of action provided a great result for New Zealand’s Trelawney Stud.

Having developed a philosophy of investing in broodmares with international pedigrees, the result of the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes (2400m) has provided a solid boost to one of the pedigrees in the Trelawney broodmare band.

Flying Cloud (Ire) (Storming Home) (pictured ) ran out an impressive four-length winner of the Ribblesdale notching up the first win of the Royal Ascot carnival for the powerful Godolphin stable.Unbeaten in three starts, she is now likely to head to the Group One Irish Oaks over the same distance.

The link to Trelawney comes through her half sister Knocknacrea (GB) (Green Desert) who was purchased from England with the assistance of bloodstock agents Kieran Moore and Bruce Perry.

Out of stakes winner Criquette (GB) (Shirley Heights), Knocknacrea is a half sister to two stakes winners in Flying Cloud and full brother Captain Webb (GB) as well as the stakes performers Candice (Ire) (Caerleon) and Open Offer (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux). She has a Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel) yearling filly on the ground, is currently in foal to O’Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon) and will visit Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) this spring.

WAIKATO STUD PURCHASE PROVES ITS METAL

The Waikato Stud bred Metal Bender's (NZ) win in the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday could be well be seen as the highlight of some spectacular results the stud has achieved by purchasing a group of 11 mares from central districts breeder Roy Potter in 2004.

Roy Potter set up Wellfield Stud in 1998 with the view of building a quality broodmare band. Over a period of three years Roy purchased on the recommendation of BP B/S approximately 15 young mares who were either in foal or off the track.

Due to business commitments which were hindering Roy's desire to be hands on with the day to day running of his Stud, Roy made the decision to sell his mares in 2004.
Waikato Stud made an offer on a package of 11 of the mares and with the help of an outstanding stallion lineup have been able to achieve some outstanding results.

Since that time 5 of the 11 mares have gone on to produce Stakes winners and one a Group placegetter, including Metal Bender (Gr1 Rosehill Guineas), Legs (Gr1 NZ Oaks), Guyno (Gr1 WATC Derby), Irlanda (Gr2 winner, Gr1 placed), Splashing Out (Gr3 winner, Gr1 placed), Vincent Mangano (Listed winner & Karaka Millions winner), Miracle Miss (Gr3 placed) & Joey Massino (Listed placed).

Despite selling his broodmare band Roy has continued to race a handful of gallopers including the Group performed Pinmdown and was also part of the syndicate put together by BP B/S who raced Down The Road. Last month Roy purchased the O'Reilly mare Exilio (out of Royal Tiara) through BP B/S as a breeding proposition. Exilio will remain in work with Ken Kelso.

MISS MAREN WINS BLACK TYPE

The Listed SAJC Schweppervescence Stakes at Morphettville yesterday was won in fine style by the striking chestnut Stravinsky (USA) mare Miss Maren, a $160,000 purchase by BP B/S from Cressfield Stud at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

The Mick Price mare was sent out a firm favourite for the 2000 metre event, but was given no favours when she became caught up behind traffic half way down the straight.

Switched around the heels of several runners, Miss Maren surged late to score by a neck confirming the potential of her facile last start win at Sandown by nearly four lengths.

Miss Maren has won four races and placed three times from 15 starts earning $123,383 and is a half-sister to Group One winner Deebee Belle from the Brilliant Invader mare Deebee Lady. She was purchased at the Inglis sale for the Carter family of Auckland.

DOWN THE ROAD NOSED OUT OF DERBY VICTORY

The $36,000 BP B/S yearling purchase Down The Road provided one of the most exciting finishes to a New Zealand Derby on Sunday (1 March 09) going down by the narrowest of margins to Australian raider, Coniston Blue.
With half a length on Coniston Blue in the home straight, Down the Road looked to have the $2.2 million Derby in the bag, but the Australian horse fought back strongly.
Coming from well back in the field, Down the Road kept trying to the line only to be beaten by a nose.Trainer Ken Kelso said the horse was “there to win”.
Getting knocked earlier in the race may not have helped his chances Kelso said but “you have to be proud of him”.

Torrential rain on Saturday, caused the postponement of the race till Sunday. Kelso said a lot of people had labeled Down the Road a wet-tracker after his win in the Championship Stakes in February but “he won at Hawkes Bay on a hard and fast track and he just seems to cope with all conditions”.

“He has been racing right through, before and around Christmas and he has never looked like jarring up.”

Out of the Stark South mare, Dixie’s Girl, bred by M S McClennan, the Danroad gelding has raced nine times and been out of the money only once. His earnings now stand at $492,928.

DOWN THE ROAD CAPTURES Gr2 and HEADS TO THE DERBY

Down The Road bounded into leading contention for New Zealand's richest race at Ellerslie, Auckland, on February 28 when winning the Group 2 $100,000 Championship Stakes (2100m) at the same venue yesterday.
Down The Road yesterday took his record to three wins from eight starts and jockey Coleman said the horse was peaking nicely for the derby, a group one race for three-year-olds over 2400m.

Down The Road is trained in Waikato at Matamata by the partnership of Ken Kelso and Thomas Russell and is owned in Hong Kong by Derek Wong Siu Ming.
The latter only purchased the horse in December after having his first five starts for a syndicate that included Wairarapa agent Bruce Perry. Down The Road was bought by Perry at auction as a yearling for $36,000. The sale enabled the group to head back to Karaka this year and purchase another four smart colts - a Fusaichi Pegasus, an O'Reilly, a Savabeel and a Bertolini. The Fusaichi Pegasus will be trained by Ken Kelso while the others will be spread between Steven McKee, Lance Noble and one other trainer.
